Masimirembwa booted out

ZANU PF acting Harare provincial chairperson Godwills Masimirembwa yesterday became the latest casualty of the party’s internal fights after he was booted out by his executive on allegations of fanning factionalism and disrespecting the party’s top leadership.

However, Masimirembwa yesterday professed ignorance over the alleged vote-of-no-confidence passed on him.

“I am hearing it from you, I don’t know about that. Anyway, I will wait for their communication on the issue and will take it from there,” Masimirembwa said.

A hastily-organised provincial executive meeting chaired by his deputy, Robert Kahanana, resolved to kick out Masimirembwa alleging that he was causing divisions in the party and misled Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko on who should be the party’s candidate for Harare East for yesterday’s by-elections.

Kahanana, who took over from Masimirembwa again in an acting capacity, confirmed the development.

“We sat as the provincial executive and passed a vote of no confidence on Cde Masimirembwa because he has failed to lead the party in the right direction. He is facing allegations of factionalism, causing divisions in the party and misleading Vice-President Mphoko on the candidature of Mavis Gumbo and Terence Mukupe. We feel that he has led the party astray and not helped at all in spearheading development in Harare,” Kahanana said.

Masimirembwa took over after the removal of the now late Epworth MP Amos Midzi, who they had accused of conniving with the former Vice-President Joice Mujuru to oust President Robert Mugabe.

“As the province, we feel Cde Masimirembwa attacked the President and was very disrespectful to the national leadership in the discharge of his duties. When he took over as the chair, he toured the province meeting the structures and in the process, he sowed seeds of division,” Kahanana said.

Last month, Masimirembwa along with his executive clashed with Zanu PF national political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere after the latter declared Mukupe as the party’s Harare East candidate.

Masimirembwa’s executive then was rallying behind Gumbo.

The two parties fought until the party’s politburo intervened and ruled that Mukupe stands as the party’s candidate.NEWSDAY
