HARARE-As Zimbabwe’s economy takes a nosedive president Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF government fears only a military uprising as it makes sure uniformed forces are paid their salaries while other civil servants do not even know when to expect their salaries.
This comes amid revelations that civil servants in the education sector last month received their pay slips which do not show this month’s (May) pay date.
Investigations by Zimbabwenewslive revealed that the soldiers and police’s payslips have pay dates while those of teachers are blank.
“My payslip shows that I will be paid on the 14th of this month,” said one soldier at Inkomo Barracks.
Earlier this year government published new pay dates for its employees as the economy grounds to a halt.
According to the schedule, teachers — who constitute the bulk of the civil service — will be paid on January 27, February 24, March 24, April 27, June 29, July 27, August 24, September 28, October 26, November 25 and December 28, 2015.
Members of the national army will receive their salaries on February 16, March 13, April 15, May 14, June 12, July 13, August 12, September 14, October 15, November 13 and December 15 2015.
The rest of the civil service will be paid on January 29, February 26, March 26, April 28, May 28, June 30, July 28, August 27, September 29, October 28, November 27 and December 29 2015.
However this month most of the teachers payslips are not indicated when they will get paid.
“My payslip has no date of the next pay day but I heard that some have May 23 on their payslips,” said one teacher from Mashonaland West province.
“Surprisingly May 23 is a Saturday,” said the teacher.
Mugabe’s government has always made sure that the military are given priority over other civil servants.
Last year bonuses for the rest of the civil servants were staggered with some having been paid their bonuses end of April instead of December last year. The Uniformed forces got their bonuses in November while teachers were paid soon after Christmas.
