FORMER Vice President Joice Mujuru has sent her congratulations to Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko wishing them the best in “their service to the nation.” Both Mnangagwa and Mphoko were sworn in as first and second VPs Friday following the purging of Mujuru and her allies. Mujuru was fired early this week alongside other cabinet ministers on allegations of plotting to kill President Mugabe. Mujuru’s dramatic fall from grace has largely been attributed to the machinations of Mnangagwa who is known to lead a rival Zanu-PF faction. But Mujuru wished her rival best and success in his new portfolio. She said: “I have nothing personal against the two vice presidents of the republic; I wish to congratulate them and wish them all success as they serve the people of Zimbabwe.” Mujuru landed the VP post a decade ago after she trounced Mnangagwa during the 2004 Zanu-PF party congress. Since then she was largely seen as an obvious candidate to succeed Mugabe amid reports of fierce rivalry between the two factions. Her fortunes changed a few months ago after the First Lady, Grace Mugabe, led the calls for her resignation claiming she was inept and corrupt. The former VP denied the allegations and challenged for evidence to be tabled but Mugabe chipped in on behalf of his wife and eventually fired Mujuru Monday night. A number of senior Zanu-PF officials were sacked along with Mujuru for allegedly being in a clique plotting to topple Mugabe and were planning a post Zimbabwe-minus the 90-year old leader. Mugabe has said if the allegations to kill him are proven and corruption evidence tabled, Mujuru might be sent to prison, but the widow of the late war commander, Solomon, has said it is mere politicking which has gone dirtier.
