MWENEZI – Mwenezi, one of the most arid districts of Zimbabwe has something to smile about as there is a bumper harvest of Mopane worms this year.
Villagers are harvesting hundreds of kilogrammes of Southern Africa’s delicacy (madora) and are already making a living by selling 20kg of the worms at $15 each and this is at the point of harvest.
They expect the price to go up soon and usually it’s $30 per 20kg at the peak of the season. The delicacy has not been seen in many years.
According to villagers in the Volacam area under Chief Maranda, they have harvested hundreds of kilogrammes and people were flocking the area to purchase the worms.
“We are set for very big business this season as the worms are in large quantities than previous years”, said Tavonga Matava, a vendor at Rutenga.
Community leaders however, raised concerns at the poor harvesting methods used by some of the villagers who cut down trees as they fetch the worms.
They said the culprits are people from outside who come to harvest the worms.
