Mwonzora captures opposition MDC-A HQ

Over 60 youths loyal to MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora have taken over the opposition headquarters Morgan Tsvangirai House on Thursday evening in Harare with the help of alleged soldiers and police.

This is a breaking story…… more follows

Background

In the 2018 election the opposition party split with Thokozani Khupe hanging on to the MDC-T name but only managing a modest 45 626 votes in presidential elections while Nelson Chamisa garnered 2,151,927 votes (according to ZEC figures) as leader of a new party the MDC Alliance.

A controversial High Court judgment ruled that Chamisa had assumed the leadership of the original MDC-T illegally and ordered a fresh congress using the party’s 2014 structures.

But the same court confusingly admitted the matter was “moot and academic” since it had been overtaken by events as Chamisa has already moved on and leads his own party, the MDC Alliance.
