The Speaker is also responsible for upholding the rights and privileges of Members and the House. The Speaker has extensive administrative functions, being responsible for the overall direction of the Parliament. In this, the Speaker is advised by the Clerk of Parliament.

Last Thursday, there were ugly scenes inside Parliament building as sergeant-at-arms dragged MDC MPs out after they had failed to stand up as per protocol, saying they did not recognize him as the President.

It could not be confirmed at the time of publishing if Mudzuri had the blessing of the MDC party to attend the State House function.

When asked, an MDC senior member who spoke to ZOOMZimbabwe said: “It’s official. The Vice President (Mudzuri) went to State House as the leader of Opposition in Sanate.”

Last week MDC Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora yesterday survived a national council push to oust him from the opposition movement.

Mwonzora reportedly faced three charges: (1) Undermining the party position by clandestinely meeting and apologising to Chief Justice Luke Malaba; (2) Failing to expel candidates that ran as independents; (3) Contradicting party vice president Morgan Komichi on congress. — ZOOMZimbabwe
