Harare – A plot to get rid of Zimbabwean Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa from both the government and the ruling Zanu-PF party is “thickening”, with his detractors planning to pass a motion of “no confidence” against him, reportsNewsDay.
It has emerged that a group of young Turks, known as the Generation 40, have devised a new plan to get rid of Mnangagwa after their previous plan which was reportedly carried out by First Lady Grace Mugabe, failed, the report said.
Grace recently told rally-goers in the north of the country that soldiers and top Zanu-PF officials angling for power wanted to kill her youngest child. This led to media speculation that she was referring to Mnangagwa and his allies.
Many in Zimbabwe took to social media to express their disbelief over Grace’s utterances.
This is not the first time the first lady has accused other Zanu-PF officials of plotting against her family. In 2014 she said the then-vice president, Joice Mujuru, wanted to oust and kill Mugabe.
According to the report, the G40 had since devised another “strategy”, with sources saying suspected members of the group had met last Friday where a plan was mooted that a “motion of no confidence” be passed against Mnangagwa.
“They agreed that the provincial commissars will push a vote of no-confidence on Mnangagwa. Mashonaland West will do that on Friday, February 26 (tomorrow), and then other provinces would follow suit. This will ratchet up pressure on [President Robert] Mugabe, who seemed unmoved by attacks on Mnangagwa last week,” an unnamed source was quoted as saying.
However, Zanu-PF national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere, who is said to be one of the G40 members, denied the claim, saying that he was not part of “such a plan”.
Kasukuwere maintained that Mugabe had the prerogative to hire and fire his deputies.
