President Mnangagwa Extends General Philip Valerio Sibanda’s Term as Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander

Harare, Zimbabwe – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially extended the term of General Philip Valerio Sibanda as the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF). The announcement, published in a government gazette dated January 3, 2025, prolongs Sibanda’s tenure from December 24, 2024, to November 23, 2025.

The extension, made under the Defence (Regular Force) (Officers) Regulations, 1988 (Statutory Instrument 152 of 1988), was confirmed by Defence Secretary Martin Rushwaya, who stated:
“His Excellency the President has, in terms of proviso (i) to the Defence (Regular Force) (Officers) Regulations, 1988, extended the appointment of General Philip Valerio Sibanda as Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces with effect from the 24th December 2024 to the 23rd November 2025.”
