Riot Cop Killed During War With Protesters In Harare?

A police officer is assaulted by angry protesters in Harare, Monday, July, 4, 2016. Police in Zimbabwe's capital fired tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to quell rioting by taxi and mini bus drivers protesting what they describe as police harassment. The violence came amid a surge in protests in recent weeks because of economic hardships and alleged mismanagement by the government of President Robert Mugabe. (AP Photo/Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi)

There are  reports that a riot cop was earlier today stoned to death during a cat and mouse battle between riot police and civilians in Harare who were protesting against unwarranted roadblocks.

Harare’s eastern suburbs were this morning hit by violent protests that left hundreds of city-bound commuters stranded as angry crowds fought with police. Police responded by deploying armed police who then unleashed a terror of violence on the protesters.

But unconfirmed reports indicate that one police officer was killed in the tussle. Efforts to verify the reports were futile as police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba’s mobile phone went unanswered until the time of publication.
