Stop Suspensions or Else: Zanu-PF

Disciplinary action will be taken against Zanu-PF members defying a directive to stop suspensions of alleged sympathisers of ousted Vice President Joice Mujuru from party structures, the Secretary for the Commissariat, Saviour Kasukuwere, warned yesterday.

Kasukuwere’s warning comes ahead of a tour by the commissariat countrywide, beginning this weekend, to assess party structures in provinces and to tackle burning issues.

“Once we have indicated our position, we expect structures of the party to respect them as announced. Those who try to resist will do so at their own cost because that amounts to indiscipline and they will be dealt with accordingly,” Kasukuwere said.

However, Kasukuwere’s team is likely to face resistance from some party members and war veterans who want a total clean-up and ouster of all senior members linked to former VP Mujuru.

Last week the Matabeleland North Zanu-PF executive led by Richard Moyo had reportedly endorsed the suspension of Rambanai Moyo, Hardman Mabanda, deputy commissar; George Chipare, deputy chairperson of women’s league; Sithembiso Mabhena and former provincial deputy chairperson Reeds Dube.

Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni also faces the chop as Matabeleland North accuses her of denigrating provincial leadership.

However, the suspensions were nullified by the Commissariat Department recently saying it was against a directive to stop such disciplinary actions on members.

The Commissariat argued that the party wanted the provinces to remain as they were before the December 6th National People’s Congress and that if such actions were allowed, it would cause chaos in the party.

However, the Zimbabwe National War Veterans Association secretary general and Zanu PF Central Committee member Victor Matemandanda, on Thursday said the suspensions should continue to weed out undesirable elements in the party despite the order to halt them.

Similar calls for the removal of people accused of working together with fired former VP Mujuru have also been made in other provinces.

Some of these provinces are Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland North, Mashonaland Central and Bulawayo.

Kasukuwere said his provincial tours would deal with any outstanding disciplinary issues and put the matters to rest.

“We will be touring the provinces to assess and strengthen the structures from the grass roots level and also deal with any outstanding issues of discipline that are there.

“We will begin with Mashonaland East on Saturday and go on to other provinces and we hope that this will be concluded as soon as possible,” he added.

Following the votes of no confidence that were passed on a number of party leaders before the 6th Zanu PF National People’s Congress, some provincial leaders have insisted on continuing with the purge so that only loyal cadres to the President and the party remain.

Kasukuwere, however, stopped the suspensions saying some of the actions were being done by people with ulterior motives to settle personal scores with other party cadres.

The revolutionary party has indicated that the structures that existed at the time of Congress should remain in place and any changes would have to be approved by the politburo and President Mugabe.

No such instructions have been issued out so far.
