Telecoms mogul Strive Masiyiwa ‘s goodwill has come under spotlight again as he tried to defend his mobile network Econet’s decision to raise data bundle prices.
Masiyiwa posted on his facebook page replying to a fan Talent Tembo.
“It is my understanding that it was a directive from the telecoms regulator.I have never supported this type of regulatory approach. It makes it difficult to introduce new services such as Mobile TV, when a “floor price” is set for data.Very unusual”, writes Masiyiwa.
Although Masiyiwa seems to disapprove of this Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) directive, his company Econet on 17 October 2016, together with other operators adopted the floor pricing model.
Masiyiwa’s company said it was failing to cover its costs and wanted an increase . Econet specifically asked for a 5 cents increase per 1MB . POTRAZ refused to grant you the 5 cents and opted to increase to 2 cents per 1MB.
See minutes of the meeting below:
When The Regulatory Determination on Floor Prices for Voice and Data for Bundled Service Packages Including Promotions will come into effect on January 9, 2017, Econet was the first operator to raise their tariffs while Telecel and NetOne remained on old tariffs.Econet increased its tarrifs to 10 cents per 1MB
Econet today issued a statement on higher data prices telling angry customers “We feel your pain”
“The double standard does not work, and undermines credibility “, says a Technology expert who prefers not to be named.
