Britwell boxer Tommy Tear’s impressive 11-fight unbeaten record as a professional was brought to a gallant end as he failed to wrestle the Southern Area welterweight crown from title-holder Tamuka Muchapondwa.

Referee Lee Cook’s 99-92 points verdict went in favour of the Reading-based Zimbabwean, but was roundly booed by the Slough fighter’s supporters inside York Hall who felt their man had matched the aggressive Mucha punch for punch in a pulsating encounter.

Tear, 27, admitted afterwards he thought Mucha might have won by a round or two, but the referee’s verdict indicted the Reading fighter had lost just one of the 10 rounds.

The Britwell boxer brought the crowd at the historic Bethnal Green venue to their feet throughout the bout, particularly in the final round when he stood toe-to-toe with the champion throwing punches in an effort to swing the decision in his favour. It wasn’t to be, however, as referee Cook clearly considered the menacing Mucha had shaded the majority of the rounds.

Tear’s manager and trainer Les Southey, who placed a £500 wager on his fighter to win at odds of 4/1, was philosophical in defeat:  “It was a great fight and there wasn’t much in it at the end.

“It could have been a draw – that’s how close I made it.

“Tommy fought his heart out. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

Tear flew off to Tenerife for some rest and relaxation in the sun after the fight, but parted by saying:  “I thought Mucha might have won it by a round or two, but not by the referee’s margin.”
