Thieves break into Gwanda prison

DARING thieves broke into Gwanda Prison Monday night getting away with valuables that included an undisclosed amount of cash and mobile phones belonging to inmates and staff in yet another incident that has exposed laxity at the prison.

Earlier this month a prisoner escaped from the remand prison in broad daylight whilst guards were reportedly chatting on their mobile phones.

The prisoner was eventually apprehended by members of the public who gave chase.

The latest incident is set to result in the firing of a number of guards especially those who were on duty on the night.

The suspected thieves, who are still at large, broke a window at the front corner of the prison before cutting off the burglar bar and getting inside.

The thieves are suspected to have taken advantage of the darkness around the prison due to poor lighting.

Tuesday morning a number of people gathered at the prison wondering how the break in could have gone unnoticed.

“It’s either an inside job or a former inmate did this,” suggested a man in the crowd.

Prison officials could not shed light saying investigations were on going.
