Traffic cop assaulted in Harare

A Harare traffic policeman was today assaulted along Willowvale Road after he allegedly caused a commuter omnibus to overturn by throwing wheel spikes resulting in the injury of more than 14 passengers.

The policeman was among officers manning a roadblock near Delta Beverages’ Willowvale Depot in Highfield area.

According to witnesses, the kombi driver tried to evade the roadblock which led the policeman to use spikes.

Several passengers were injured and taken to Harare Hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that after the incident the policemen who were manning the roadblock fled from the scene. The officer who had thrown the spikes also tried to flee but was apprehended by members of the public.

He was reportedly assaulted by members of the public for more than an hour before he rescued by a soldier and another civilian.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said she was still to get details of what transpired.
