Troubled Mutasa Awaits Mugabe’s Return to Seal His Fate

Zanu PF Manicaland says there is no going back on its recent resolution to expel former Presidential Affairs minister Didymus Mutasa from the ruling party, adding that the province is now waiting for President Robert Mugabe to endorse the decision on his return from his Far East jaunt.

Samuel Undenge, the Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson, said yesterday that his executive committee would not rescind its decision to have Mutasa expelled from the party, and had already written to the politburo to this effect.

“We are not going to change and we no longer work with Mutasa,” Undenge said.

“The province made its decision on him and it is final.

“We are waiting for the politburo to deliberate on the matter whenever they shall sit and finalise on Mutasa’s matter.”

Mutasa, a member of Mugabe’s first Cabinet when Zimbabwe got its independence in 1980, has told the 15-nation Southern African Development Community (Sadc) that his removal and that of other officials from their positions in the ruling party was unconstitutional.

Mutasa was one of a number of senior party officials, including former vice president Joice Mujuru, who lost their posts at the party’s controversial congress in December last year.

He has also dismissed contemptuously the recommendation by his Manicaland home province to expel him, saying the only Zanu PF that he knew and recognised was the one that existed prior to the “criminal congress” held in Harare last month.

“I want to know which Zanu PF they are talking about,” Mutasa said.

“Is it the Zanu PF after congress where they are members of, or which came to being after the 6th congress?

“If it is that, I am not a member of that. I am a member of Zanu PF which goes up to the 6th congress and they cannot expel me from that and because they are not anymore members of that Zanu PF.”

Although Mutasa still fondly refers to Mugabe as Baba (father) he said his erstwhile comrades who participated in the damp squib “elective” congress last December effectively fired themselves out of the real “law-abiding Zanu PF”.

“They all moved to their Zanu PF after their congress, which was illegal, and I don’t mind how many times they expel me from that because I have never been a member of it,” he said.DAILYNEWS
