Tsoka Dzerwendo:Fans warm up to Macheso’s new fastest selling album

HARARE – 250 000 copies of Alick Macheso’s latest album Tsoka Dzerwendo had been sold out just four hours after its nationwide release.

Macheso’s publicist Tichaona “Tich” Makahamadze said the uptake of the new album had been overwhelming.

He, however, could not readily give figures.

“We have been overwhelmed by the interest in Macheso’s album but it is still too early to give accurate figures but the truth of the matter is that most of the copies that were being sold by Zimbabwe Red Cross volunteers are gone,” he said.

The bulk of people interviewed by the Daily News on the streets of Harare yesterday endorsed Macheso’s 10th album which was released yesterday morning after a four-year hiatus.

Taxi driver Wellington Dzapasi described the new album as “Macheso at his very best.”

“I will buy a copy for myself but from what I have heard, the album is good. Pakabatwa basa, kwakuseri (He did a good job, the album is very good),” said Dzapasi.

Pretty Mpofu, a fruit vendor at Fourth Street bus terminus, also endorsed the album.

“Ndiye Macheso ataiziva kwete zvokutamba nembwa kuya (Macheso is back at his best),” she said.

Flea market vendor Loveness Chitongo said the just-released album will prove wrong the sungura star’s detractors.

“Macheso haaperi, munonyeperana imi. Mazvionaka kuti isimbi yebasa. Hecho chikakarara chealbum (Macheso is far from a spent force. He has proved his doubters wrong by dropping this master piece),” she said.

Pearson Moyo, a kombi driver on the Harare-Domboshava route said it was too early to pass a verdict on the just-released album.

“It might be too early to judge but from what I have heard so far, I think Macheso has struck the right cords this time around,” said Moyo.

The six-track Tsoka Dzerwendo (Ayayaa) contains songs namely Baba, Kurarama Inyasha, Wandirangaridza, Munyaradzi, Gungwa and Mude Mude.

Potential hits include Baba which advises men against abandoning their fatherly responsibilities and Kurarama Inyasha on which Macheso says life is a favour from God.

Another possible hit is Gungwa which is about the futility of interfering with God’s pre-determined plans.

The Tafadzwa hit-maker’s previous albums include Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure), Zvinoda Kutendwa, Ndezvashe-eh, Vapupuri Pupurai, Zvido Zvenyu Kunyanya, Zvakanaka Zvakadaro, Simbaradzo, Vakiridzo and Magariro.
