Tsvangirai confronts clinic staff

MDC- T leader Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday confronted medical staff at Hopley Clinic in Harare South following claims by his party supporters that the clinic was discriminating and denying them medication along political party lines.

Tsvangirai, who was touring the informal settlement on the outskirts of the capital to gather residents’ concerns over service delivery, stormed into the sister-in-charge’s office at the clinic office and quizzed her over allegations that the health institution was only attending to Zanu PF card holders.

The clinic staff denied the charges and referred Tsvangirai to their bosses in the Health and Child Care ministry.

“We have no such cases reported. Everyone who comes in pays $5 that covers five days,” said the nurse-in-charge who declined to be named.

Residents told Tsvangirai that they were sitting on a health time bomb following the outbreak of diarrhoea in the area, adding that the populous settlement had no running water.

“We have no water in this area and all these people fetch water in this well,” said MDC-T Harare South chairperson Trouble Hasha.

Tsvangirai was accompanied by several party officials and Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni.
