Former X Factor hopeful Gamu Nhengu has embarked on a new career – as a Top Shop stylist

Of all the contestants ever to miss out on The X Factor shows, few have proven as memorable as 2010’s Gamu Nhengu.

That’s because the Zimbabwean singer looked to be a sure thing for the live shows until her mentor Cheryl decided to put fellow performer Katie Waissel through instead – causing outrage among viewers who wanted to see Gamu go through.

But six years on from Gamu-Gate – as it became known – just where is the singer now?

Well, following The Xtra Factor’s #findgamu campaign, launched by Rylan Clark-Neal on the ITV2 show, and backed by the likes of Jay McGuiness, it seems that the lady herself has indeed been tracked down.

And the good news is that she’s doing pretty well for herself, working as a stylist in Top Shop while at the same time prepping her musical comeback.

And she’s had a bit of an image change too:

Gamu, who was just 18 when she appeared on the show, took to Facebook recently to talk about her X Factor experience, saying: ‘To be completely honest I was trying very hard to pretend that the past 6 years had not happened.

‘If you stopped me in the street and asked me if I was ‘Gamu from X factor’ I 99% probably would’ve said ‘no’ .And honestly if you do it now it might still be the same.’

She added that she had been ‘wholly unprepared’ for the music industry when she was 18, saying: ‘I wish someone had pulled me to the side and forewarned me that it was 80% sleepless nights and 20% a bit of a giggle.

‘I was young and incredibly naive,’ Gamu explained. ‘Too polite for my own good, never standing up for myself. Instead I just hid away and tried to pretend it wasn’t happening.’

Her departure from The X Factor was so controversial at the time that it even spawned a petition with 250,000 signatures, as viewers demanded her reinstatement to the show.

Cheryl later defended her choice of acts – which also included Cher Lloyd and Rebecca Ferguson – saying: ‘I went by my gut instinct and I thought my decision was best.’

Katie Waissel was subsequently eliminated in week 7 of the live shows and Cher Lloyd went on to finish fourth – while Rebecca Ferguson was runner-up to eventual winner Matt Cardle.

So now we’ve found Gamu, will we be seeing her on The Xtra Factor along with all those other old contestants who keep showing up? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.-Metro.co.uk
