The University of Zimbabwe Faculty of Teacher Education has announced the cancellation and subsequent withdrawal of diplomas awarded to over 100 former Marymount Teachers College intake 6 students citing massive exam fraud, file theft, assignment duplication and other gross irregularities.

Former students who completed their course in June of 2008 and only to have their results released in December are deployed to various districts around the country and some have even left the country for greener pastures.

Asked for comment as to why the decision has taken 8 years to announce, Vice Chancellor of the country’s oldest higher education institution said that the board of investigation was facing one of the most subtle and sensitive academic criminal cases hence the need for cautious and meticulous verification so as to avoid common errors.

The Ministers of Primary and secondary Education and The Public Service Commission have also weighed in to announce immediate dismissal without benefit of those students who had happened to join the Public Service as primary school teachers.

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) President Takavafira Zhou said that his union will fight it in court to defend its affected members.

ZIMTA said that it was well to get rid of exam thieves who masquerade as teachers while they were academic thugs.

The affected former students are expected not to report for duty on Tuesday when schools open as they are fired. Asked for comments, the principal of Marymount Teachers College confirmed the developments but referred further questions to the Ministry of Higher Education.

One of the affected former students contacted by this reporter could not respond to questions since she was in tears. The affected teachers are:
