Zifa benefactor flaunts R197 500 watch February 28, 2016 in Sport

Zifa benefactor Wicknell Chivayo has a reputation of being the king of bling, but many might have thought he will slow down when he stepped in as the beleaguered association’s main sponsor last year.

Those who had drawn such conclusions are being forced to eat their words: Sir Wicknell as Chivayo calls himself still wants everyone to know that he enjoys the finer things in life.

Last week after handing over a top of the range car to Mighty Warriors coach Shadreck Mlauzi and promising national teams’ fancy footwear, he took to Facebook to flaunt a R197 500 Rolex watch he had just bought in South Africa.

He posted an image of the watch bought in the leafy shopping district of Sandton, Johannesburg and a receipt to prove he parted with the eye popping figure just for a watch.

“I buy expensive watches because I can’t afford to read the wrong time,” he boasted in the February 20 post. “My time is money.

“I’ve made big money all my life, way beyond your imagination and that will never stop.

“I’m not a general dealer, I run legitimate businesses that the technocrats involved assess on merit.”

The following day he uploaded a picture of three new pairs of Louis Vuiton shoes as well another pair of sandals, but this time no receipt was posted to show the trendy footwear’s value.

While a vast majority of Chivayo’s followers and critics treat his pomposity with disdain, one wonders whether his benevolence to the Warriors and Zimbabwe football is driven by a penchant to just show off or a heart to give.

Chivayo set tongues wagging when he pledged $1 million to Zifa with many questioning the authenticity of the deal but he easily went about honouring his pledge.

Not only that, he decided that he would buy top of the range cars for national team coaches Kalisto Pasuwa and Mlauzi.

Whatever the case, he seems to be winning over some of his enemies and his Facebook post after handing over Mlauzi’s vehicle portrays a man who actually feels for the less fortunate.

“Mlauzi car hand over . . . I am the CEO of my life and I make the executive decisions so I take pride in the fact that if I say I’m going to do something I do it,” Chivayo posted on Facebook.

“If it means I have to give away everything I have and remain with nothing so be it because God is the only reason I made it this far .

“I’m a very simple man, smart impresses me, strength of character impresses me, but most of all I am impressed by kindness.

“I think kindness comes from learning life’s hard lessons well, from falling and picking yourself up. It comes from surviving failure and loss.
“It implies a clear understanding of the human condition that constantly requires forgiveness and mercy.

“So when I see that in someone it fills me with admiration.”

Chivayo has tied his involvement with Zifa to Chiyangwa’s term that began last December following the ouster of Cuthbert Dube.
