THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has banned the use of handheld spikes with immediate effect following a public outcry.
A public outcry over accidents allegedly caused by spikes thrown at moving vehicles by police officers has seen Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General, Godwin Matanga banning the use of handheld spikes.
This was confirmed by ZRP Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi in an exclusive interview with ZBC this Friday.
“The Commissioner General of police has noted with concern allegations that officers are using handheld spikes, in this regard he has with immediate effect banned the use of the handheld spikes by the police,” said Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, ZRP National spokesperson.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi also warned members of the police force against owning or operating pirate taxis.
“No police officers should be involved in the transport business and if the public is aware they are free to report to us. We need operations to restore sanity because we are grappling with touts and pirate taxis playing hide and seek with the police officers.
“We need to catch up with the perpetrators.”
Some lives have been lost on the country’s roads, with the public and even parliamentarians raising alarm over the use of spikes on moving vehicles.-zbc
