Zimbabwean Woman Jailed 5 Years for Possessing Diamonds Worth $10

A 34-year-old woman from Mutare’s Hobhouse high-density suburb was slapped with a five-year jail term last week after she was found in possession of 20 pieces of diamonds worth a paltry $10.

Abigail Muchesa learnt it the hard way that crime does not pay when Mutare provincial magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe slapped her with imprisonment.

She was convicted for contravening Section 3(1) as read with Section 3 (2) of the Precious Stones Trade Act. Muchesa pleaded guilty to the charges. She said she committed the crime in order to raise money to pay school fees for her children.

Mr Brian Goto prosecuted.

The diamonds weighed 1.8 carats after being assayed at the Mineral Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe.

“On January 7 last year, at around 12 mid-day, police officers received information and intercepted Muchesa who was in possession of diamonds at St Joseph’s Hospital. She was in possession of 20 pieces of diamonds weighing 1.82 carats. They are valued at $10,47,” he said.

Muchesa was arrested after detectives with the Minerals and Border Control Unit received a tip off that she was in possession of diamonds.

The cops acted on the tip off and intercepted Muchesa at Hobhouse bus termini.

They attempted to search her but she volunteered and surrendered a plastic that was in her jean skirt pocket. She handed over the plastic to the police officers and they discovered 20 pieces of diamonds.-Manicapost
