Zimbabweans turn to Drug And Alcohol abuse

LACK of jobs and opportunities in the country are driving more and more youths into drug abuse, according to Youth Assist Network (Yan).

Yan co-founder Diana Bamala told the Daily News that with a lot of idle time on their hands, many of Zimbabwe’s young population are spending their time watching movies that glorify drug abuse and reckless sexual lifestyles. As a result, these youths are now addicted to hard drugs.

“Due to globalisation, drug and alcohol abuse has become the new norm for adolescents in Zimbabwe as they are idle in their homes due to the economic situation in our country and all they do is watch movies and videos that normalise drug abuse,” Bamala said.

Yan has identified Epworth, Mabvuku, Mufakose, Highfield, Kuwadzana and Glen Norah as red zones where drug abuse among the youth is prevalent.

However, the situation is dire in Kuwadzana where at least 10 males died this year due to substance abuse.
