A NEW craze for making money has emerged in Zimbabwe as the economy remains weak and unemployment rises to record highs.
Many, in desperation, have turned to vending as the two million new jobs promised by President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party while campaigning for re-election in 2013 have not materialised.
But betting and gambling have also centre stage.
Hundreds if not thousands of mostly males of various age groups are now taking to betting on sports especially football and horse racing in the fight to make a living.
Vending, and now gambling, have become key drivers of what Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa described as the “new economy”.
Oppostion parties say the Zanu PF-led administration, consumed by internal fights over the succession of the 91-year-old President Robert Mugabe has run out of ideas on how to revive the country’s economy.
The MDC Renewal Team has challenged Mugabe to concede defeat and handover the running of the economy to a team of competent technocrats.
