A STRIKE by public transporters over road blocks turned violent Monday as commuter omnibus drivers and touts fought running battles with police in Harare.

Most commuters from places like Ruwa, Mabvuku/Tafara, Hatfield and Epworth were stranded due to the strike which saw some roads blocked with rocks and concrete blocks.

In some situations kombi drivers and touts forced private vehicles to drop passengers, leaving hundreds of people including school children to walk to their respective destinations.

According to Associated Press, police had to fire tears gas and water cannons after some officers were assaulted.

The development comes days after riots rocked Beitbridge as residents protested against the banning of some imports from South Africa leading to the temporary closure of the border post. About 17 people were arrested following the riots which saw a warehouse belonging to ZIMRA torched.

Kombi drivers and touts said they were sick and tired with the proliferation of police road blocks in the capital.
