MASVINGO Rural District chairperson Killer Zivhu is planning a mega-gig to welcome the province’s first woman resident minister Shuvai Mahofa.
Mahofa was appointed by President Robert Mugabe two weeks ago and Zivhu told journalists at a press briefing last week that Chiredzi will play host to “more than 20 000 people” who are expected to attend the event.
“We are organising a very big event as the leadership in the province to welcome the Minister for Provincial Affairs who has just been appointed by the President.
“She is the first woman Governor for the province since independence and we would like to celebrate this milestone achievement with all progressive women in the province and beyond,” said Zivhu who has turned into a philanthropist of some sort.
Zivhu said the Zanu PF provincial leadership is satisfied with Mahofa’s appointment and “we are ready to work with her in bringing development to the province among a host of issues that she will soon be attending to”.
“She is a woman and a mother and our hope is that she will be receptive particularly to the disturbing issue of the Chingwizi villagers. It is a matter of urgency and the minister will be asked to make a determination on the future of these people very soon. We will engage her on this to rescue our people,” he said.
Zivhu has been particularly vocal over the welfare of the Chingwizi flood victims arguing the area to which they were relocated is not fit for human habitation.
Mahofa has since visited Chingwizi amid reports government is mulling alternative relocation for the more than 20 000 people affected by the Tokwe-Mukorsi dam construction problems.
Mahofa’s appointment was greeted with howls of disapproval given she has been fingered in poaching activities alongside other Zanu PF big wigs in the low veld area.
Media reports have said 74 year-old Mahofa, soon after her appointment, ordered that her office be moved to the ground floor of a government complex in Masvingo as she could not use the staircase.
