ZPCS officials perish enroute to boss’ funeral parade

TWO senior Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officers died yesterday while seven others were injured while on their way to Ntabazinduna for a funeral parade of the late Retired Deputy Commissioner-General Rhodes Moyo.

The Commissioner-General for the ZPCS Paradzai Zimondi said the service was hit by a double tragedy and passed his condolences to the families of the deceased.

Details of the accident were still sketchy by the time of going to print but ZPCS confirmed that the Officer-In-Charge for Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo, Superintendent Hapson Sithole and a Senior Prison Officer only identified as Kuzonyeyi died at Boterekwa in Shurugwi in an accident while driving to Ntabazinduna ZPCS Depot for the funeral parade.

Seven others who were in the vehicle are said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries and were admitted to Gweru General Hospital. Rtd Deputy Comm-Gen Moyo (60) died in Gwanda on Thursday last week while taking a morning jog in Jacaranda suburb. Comm-Gen Zimondi described his late deputy as a humble and considerate leader.

“He was easy to interact with during his deployment, my working experience with the deceased showed that he was a modest man, a very receptive and open minded senior officer.

“He preached peace, and harmony among staff members,” he said.

Comm-Gen Zimondi said Rtd Deputy Comm-Gen Moyo was one of the cadres whose dedication and commitment to duty made it possible for him to rise through the ranks to his level as he devoted 40 years of loyal service to ZPCS and the nation at large.

He said Rtd Deputy Comm-Gen Moyo left a legacy of unparalleled leadership distinction and exemplary mentorship during his tour of duty with the United Nations Mission in Liberia.

Rtd Deputy Comm Gen Moyo was born in Gwanda on 25 February 1956 and attended Selonga Primary School until 1972 where he later joined the Rhodesia Prison Service in 1976.

He later advanced his academics by writing his Ordinary and Advanced levels and went on to attain a diploma in Public Relations.

He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Communication and went on to attain a Master’s of Science in Strategic Management at Chinhoyi University of Science and Technology in 2014.

On his retirement on 25 February this year he was Deputy Commissioner General responsible for Administration.

Deputy Comm-Gen Moyo will be buried in Samlodi area in Gwanda today. He leaves behind a wife Commissioner Jesca Moyo, three children and four grandchildren.
