I am the best trained war cadre, boasts Mpofu

Former Mines Minister Obert Mpofu

TRANSPORT Minister Obert Mpofu on Monday boasted that he was the best-trained combatant in the country.

Mpofu made the remarks while addressing journalists, fellow ministers, government officials and businesspersons in Victoria Falls after touring Victoria Falls International Airport.

He said none of Zimbabwe’s former freedom fighters could beat his military prowess.

“I am the best trained combatant in the country. If there is anyone who trained better than me, let him challenge me,” said Mpofu.

Mpofu, who was giving a briefing on progress made so far at the international airport which is set to be completed mid-next year, talked about how he joined the liberation war as a small boy.

“This is my area,” he said. “I was born closer to the airport in Chidobe and we would herd cattle right where the airport is before it was built in the 60s.

“I met Mathema (Cain the Minister of State for Matabeleland North) in 1968 when we joined the war.”

“Our mission was infrastructure and we attacked the airport in 1969. I was part of the group that attacked the airport and here I am reconstructing what I destroyed during the war,” he said drawing laughter from the audience.

Mpofu bragged that he had done more than any other minister to develop infrastructure in Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, Mpofu said his ministry was impressed with progress made so far on the China Jiangsu-sponsored project whose rehabilitation was funded to the tune of $150 million.

The terminal is 43 percent complete while the runway is 70 percent complete, according to engineers.
