The three former South African police officers who were arrested in the Central Region of Ghana for allegedly engaging in activities that have national security implications have been deported.
The three were put on board South African Airways flight number 210, which departed around 9:26 to Johannesburg after their entry visas were revoked by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
Officials from the GIS and security details from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), escorted the three to the aircraft, which was yet to be boarded by other passengers.
News Ghana can say that the three were made to board the aircraft around 8:30 am today without their handcuffed on.
Sources say, South African officials would meet the three on arrival.
The three, Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis (retd), 54; Warrant Officer Denver Dwayhe, 33, and Captain Mlungiseli Jokani, 45 were arrested at the EL-Capitano Hotel where it was believed that they were training 15 young men in various security drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response exercises.
After their arrest, they were put before the Court and were granted bail on March 24, 2016, but officials of the BNI whisked the three away amidst protest from their lawyers, who viewed the act as an abuse of the rights of the accused persons.
They were each charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful training and making false declaration after they pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The prosecution prayed the court to remand the accused persons since investigations were ongoing but lawyers for the accused persons garnered legal arguments to justify why the three should be granted bail.
The prosecution, led by Superintendent Francis Baah had wanted the accused persons to be remanded but the defence lawyers raised objections and said the offences for which the three were being held were bailable.
The court presided over by Mrs Patricia Quansah granted the accused persons bail and ordered that the passports of the accused persons should be deposited with the Registrar of the court and that the sureties were to provide photo identity cards to satisfy the bail conditions.
Meanwhile, their Lawyers, led by Mr Ellis Owusu Fordjour and Mr Samuel Atta Akyea raised legal issues with the continuous detention of the three and indicated their intent to file the necessary legal papers in court to secure their release.
However, in Court it was indicated in the fact sheet that the accused persons were retired South African Police Officers and that between the month of January 2016 and March 2016, who applied for visa at the Ghana High Commission in South Africa on the pretext of doing business in Ghana.
It said based on the information given to the High Commissioner, the accused persons were granted their visas and they arrived in Ghana in the month of March 2016.
According to the facts, a few days ago, information reached the security agencies that some people were training five people in military tactics at Agona Duakwa.
They were arrested and during investigation, the accused persons stated that they were brought into the country from South Africa by one Captain Edmund Kojo Koda (retd) and Captain Kwesi Acquah (retd) to train New Patriotic Party (NPP) security personnel towards 2016 general election in Ghana.
Also the Ghana Immigration Service which conducted its investigations indicated that the accused persons filled disembarkation forms indicating they were in Ghana to do business.
