Harare – A day-old baby was reportedly rescued by good Samaritans a few weeks ago after being dumped in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza outside of Harare, Zimbabwe.
According to The Sunday Mail, the infant was found wrapped in a T-shirt and soaked in rainwater.
The baby’s mother Mavis Kasirai, 18, gave birth to the infant on January 9 before “dumping the baby in rainwater a day later”.
The baby was discovered by Mathias Tivaone while on his way to church. He had heard the baby crying in a grassy area near a car park.
Mathias alerted his mother Catharine Tivaone, who rushed the baby to the hospital.
Kasirai was sentenced to 10 months in prison after she pleaded guilty to exposing an infant to danger.
Around the same time last year, a 5-day-old baby boy was dumped by his 26-year-old mother at a grave yard in Waterfalls, Harare, according to Zimbabwe Daily.
Mercy Madziwa allegedly tied the baby’s neck with a T-shirt, placed it in a plastic bag, before dumping it at a cemetery.
Madziwa pleaded guilty to the charge of child negligence.-n24
