Davido heads for Zim

The long wait is over as Nigerian pop star Davido is expected to perform live in Harare this August ending months of speculation. The “Aye” hitmaker’s debut concert comes a month after another hugely successful gig by a fellow countryman Burna Boy held at the newly opened Pablo’z VIP.

He is scheduled to perform on August 29 with a welcome party a day before.

Davido (pictured) will perform at Belgravia Sports Club alongside some of Zimbabwe’s finest performing artistes who include Sulumani Chimbetu and Jah Prayzah among others.

In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, show organisers Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions said they have already started planning for the show.

“I am happy that we are at an advanced stage on the preparations for the show. We will reveal some of the artistes who will share the stage with Davido.

“We want people to vote for who they want to see on stage on the day with Davido,” he said.

Chimbodza said tickets will be priced between $10 and $20.

He said the visit by Davido will put Zimbabwe on the map and local artistes will have a chance to learn from the multi-talented award-winning singer.

Meanwhile, the recent MTV Africa Music Award winner posted a video on social media confirming his performance.

“I will be in Zimbabwe on August 29, performing at Belgravia Sports Club,” he said.

Previously, Davido made it no secret that his mission to conquer the world would not be complete without staging a show in Zimbabwe.

Initially, the multi-award- winning artiste was scheduled to perform in Harare in May but the show failed to take off due to a number of issues including non-payment of appearance fees.

However, that did not dampen his spirits to visit one of the serene places in Africa like Harare, which at one point was dubbed “the concert country” by Jamaican dancehall star Sean Paul.

Of course, that would not be without a reason since renowned artistes, among them the late legendary Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, Akon and Beenie Man to mention a few, have had great outings in Harare.

Davido is raring to go and a bumper crowd is expected at Belgravia Sports Club for what appears to be a big concert so far this year. Besides the likes of Don Jazzy, Pato Ranking, Dr Sid, who are doing wonders in Nigeria, Davido is currently at the top of his game after he won the Best Male Artiste at the MAMAs held in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend.

The diminutive singer boasts several hits up his sleeves including “Dami Duro”, “Skelewu”, “All Of You” and “Tchelete” featuring South Africa’s Mafikizolo.

Davido was born on November 21, 1992 to Chief Deji and Vero Adeleke in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is a Nigerian business magnate while his late mother was a university lecturer.

He attended the British International School in Lagos.

Davido studied Business Administration at Oakwood University prior to relocating to Nigeria. He graduated from Babcock University in Ogun State .

Davido’s debut studio album, “Omo Baba Olowo”, began in 2011.

Davido co-produced “Dami Duro” with Shizzi and released it on October 30, 2011.

The music video for “Dami Duro” was released on January 8, 2012.

It was shot and directed in Lagos by Clarence Peters, and was released during the Occupy Nigeria protests.

In an interview posted on Notjustok, Davido spoke on the release and composition of “Dami Duro”.

He said he recorded “Dami Duro” in August 2011.

Three months later, the song got leaked after he sent it out to some friends.

On May 6, 2012, HKN Music released “Overseas” as a single off the album.

The unfinished version of the song leaked prior to the official release.

On September 28, 2012, HKN Music released the music video for “All of You”. The song was produced by Gospelondabeat.

When the song was released, it was rumoured to be a “beef track”.

In another interview with Factory 78 TV, Davido debunked the rumours and said he recorded the song with Gospel after meeting him at a mall.

To further promote the album, Davido released music videos for “Ekuro”, “Gbon Gbon”, and “Feel Alright”.

Meanwhile, Harare will host other international musicians Toni Braxton and Babyface at Borrowdale Racecourse on August 28.

The duo will perform in Zimbabwe before heading to South Africa for more shows. Tickets for their local show will go for between $50 and $150.
