Elderly man killed in KZN farm attempted murder-suicide

Durban – An elderly man was killed and another badly wounded in an apparent case of attempted murder-suicide on a farm in Richmond near Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics had rushed to the farm house, which is located a short distance from a rural road.

“A security company ushered paramedics into the residence where they found a man in his 70’s lying on the couch with a gunshot wound to his chest. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on scene,” he said.

“A second man, aged 70, was also found on scene with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.

Treatment and advanced life support interventions were immediately performed on the patient to stabilise his vital signs. Once treated, the patient was transported to MediClinic Pietermaritzburg for urgent treatment,” Meiring added.

He said local authorities were on scene for further investigation.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the man who survived was the owner of the farm.

“The farm owner was allegedly shot and injured at his farm in Byrne Village. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and the motive of the attack is unknown at this stage,” he said.

“The suspect turned the gun on himself. Richmond police opened a case of attempted murder and an inquest in respect of the dead suspect,” Zwane said.
