I was fired for challenging dictatorship: Mujuru

Zimbabwe’s former vice president, Joice Mujuru, says she was fired for challenging dictatorial tendencies within the ruling party.

Mujuru says Zanu PF is no longer attentive to the grievances of the majority.

Mujuru is canvassing support for her new political party which is set to challenge Zanu PF in the 2018 elections.

She is on the campaign trail and trying to put some distance between herself and her former party.

She formed Zimbabwe People First in March, following her expulsion from Zanu PF.

President Robert Mugabe claimed she had tried to topple him and also accused her of corruption for allegedly extorting bribes from businesses.

Majuru refutes this: “Today, I stand to tell you the truth. Everything said about me was a lie, we are surprised that despite the accusations, we haven’t been arrested yet or even jailed. We haven’t even been contacted by police,” says Majuru.

Zimbabwe’s economy has been spiralling downwards and there is growing disenchantment among citizens over corruption.

Thousands of people turned out to attend the party’s first rally in the capital, Harare.

Faced with a collapsing economy and joblessness, they want a responsive government and an end to corruption.

Majuru is promising to improve the welfare of the liberation war fighters, and to review the black empowerment policy.
