Grace Mugabe skips meals in solidarity with hungry Zimbabweans

President Robert Mugabe’s wife says she often skips meals in solidarity with the hungry in her country.

HARARE – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace, says she often skips meals in solidarity with the hungry in her country.

The 50-year-old first lady was holding rallies in all the country’s provinces, where she says she hands out food and other goods to supporters.

Grace Mugabe told supporters at her rally in Harare’s Mbare township that she skips meals to show her sympathy for the hungry.

Food needs are rising in Zimbabwe, the UN says around 900,000 Zimbabweans are currently in need of emergency aid, with the figure likely to rise to 1.5 million early next year.

The first lady suggested that the reason reporters from Zimbabwe’s private press write unflattering reports about her is because they’re hungry.

She invited journalists to sign up for some of the rice she distributed at the rally.
