Harare man killed over $6 kachasu debt

THREE Epworth residents who include a 59-year-old woman and her son appeared in court Wednesday for allegedly murdering a neighbour who had failed to honour a $6 debt after acquiring some illicit brew, popularly known as kachasu, from the trio.

Anna Nelson, Naison Nelson, 39, and Fazile Makeleni, all from Overspill area in the sprawling Harare township, appeared before magistrate Barbra Chimboza and were remanded in custody pending their indictment.

Allegations against the three arose in July last year.

Court heard that the deceased, Obey Murenge, in January last year took some beer from Anna Nelson who is in the business of brewing kachasu. He failed to pay the debt as per agreement.

Murenge returned to the Nelsons in June and when asked over the long outstanding payment, he said he had not yet raised the money.

The State further alleges that Murenge went on to offer his torn pair of shoes which he said could be resold to raise money to cover the debt.

But this incensed the older Nelson who called her Naison and the latter started assaulting Murenge with an unknown blunt weapon.

Court further heard Makeleni joined in assaulting Murenge who sustained head injuries.

After the assault, Murenge forced his battered frame back home but his condition further deteriorated.

He revealed the abuse to his father who took him to Parirenyatwa hospital where he was admitted until July.

However, his condition did not improve and he died on July 5.-NewZimbabwe
