HARARE City council has advised vendors to pay their daily trading fees of $1,25 or risk losing their stalls to other traders according to state media.
The city council said in a statement yesterday that all trading sites were now ready for occupation to harare vendors who have registered with the City Council and obtained vendors’ cards .
“All members of the informal sector who have registered with Harare City Council and have been issued with automated vendor cards should start trading from the approved sites immediately,” said the city.
“All trading sites are provided with water and ablution facilities.”
Early June the government extended the deadline for vendors to relocate to designated sites to June 26 saying this will enable city fathers to have more time to provide decent trading places for them.
The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Ignatius Chombo had given vendors operating in central business districts a seven day ultimatum ending on June 8 to relocate to designated sites.
Addressing a Press conference , Minister of Small to Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development Sithembiso Nyoni said cabinet had come up a paper to deal with the plight of the vendors.
“Not everyone on the streets is a vendor. Some of them are there because the circumstances are beyond their control. They cannot do what they are qualified to do,” she said.
Minister Nyoni said no one should pay money to anyone by the city council. “Even your association leaders should not receive any money She said before the vendors move out of CBD, they will be asked to clean up the streets and remove all litter.
“What the ministry has come up with is a holistic approach to the vendor issue that is going to address the short term, medium term and long term economic plight of the informal sector,” she said.
