A MUTARE man who stole a bottle of perfume from a local supermarket with the intention of reselling it and get money to buy food so he could take his anti-retroviral drugs has been arraigned before the courts.
The 42 year old man pleaded guilty to stealing a $3,95 perfume from OK Supermarket when he appeared in court on Monday.
He appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Yeukai Chigodora. In mitigation the suspect told the court that he and his wife were HIV patients who had to eat before taking their anti-retroviral drugs.
He said he had no option but to steal the perfume to raise money to buy food.
“Your Worship, we cannot take our drugs without eating anything and because I had no money at home I had to steal the perfume,” he pleaded with the court.
The court was however left in stitches after he revealed that he had $100 in savings yet he claimed before the court that he had nothing and had to steal the perfume to buy food.
He was ordered to pay $100 fines or risk 30 days imprisonment. Public prosecutor Mr Fletcher Karombe alleged that the accused was observed by an OK supermarket CCTV controller taking a bottle of Malizia perfume which he put in his pocket.
He was arrested after trying to leave the supermarket without paying for the perfume at the till-point.-Manicapost
