ANC councillors walk out as Trollip elected NMB mayor

PORT ELIZABETH – The ANC has already tried to stop a council meeting taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay.

The party has confirmed its lawyers have written to the acting municipal manager, demanding proceedings be postponed.

It believes the seat allocation is flawed, and is threatening to take the matter to the high court.

But the meeting has proceeded regardless, and is currently under way.

Athol Trollip is set to be elected mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay.

The DA has formed a coalition with the ACDP, UDM, Cope.

The group now has the required numbers, to govern the sought-after metro.

Trollip says the DA’s priority is to fight corruption and improve service delivery in the municipality.

The EFF has backed the party, in a bid to ensure the ANC does not govern there, but it stopped short of joining the collective.

The DA says the endorsement from the red berets is significant for the future of democracy.
