Mr Kaweesi said the guild president should look for Mr Mugarura and hand him over to  police which would help him improve his innovation.

KAMPALA- Police have said the Makerere University student who claims to manufacture tear gas “is a wanted criminal”.

Mr Andrew Kaweesi, the police spokesperson, said Mr Samuel Mugarura is wanted to answer two criminal cases at Wandegeya Division Police Station.

“A lot has been said that the police are witch-hunting Samuel Mugarura and his teargas innovations. That is not true. He is a wanted criminal with two cases at Wandegeya Police Station. He is using this innovation to cover up,” Mr Kaweesi said on Saturday at Makerere University shortly after the memorial lecture of Uganda’s first African Inspector General of Police Elinayo Oryema.

Mr Kaweesi said Mr Mugarura is wanted over assault, drug abuse and being in possession of government store, among other charges.

Mr Roy Ssemboga, Makerere University guild president warned the police dare not to arrest Mr Mugarura because students are ready to oppose the move advising the force to be proud of his innovations.

“Police must be exemplary. Our colleague invented teargas from sugarcane sucrose and is now being hunted. You arrest him, you will arrest the whole Makerere,” he said.

In response, Mr Kaweesi said the guild president should look for Mr Mugarura and hand him over to  police which would help him improve his innovation.

“If he is really not trying to use his innovation to run away from the police, he should come to us and we help him. Look for him because we are ready for him,” Mr Kaweesi said.

Mr Mugarura, denied having pending charges and described the police allegation as intended to frustrate his innovations.

“I was arrested during the guild elections with other students and we were released with no charges slapped on us. If I have cases to answer, then the police know where to find me,” he said.

Samuel Mugarura, a third year student of Chemistry and Botany at Makerere University shot to the limelight nearly a fortnight ago after his tear gas innovations.

He uses sugar, salt and food colour, among others to make teargas and other smoke bombs.-monitor.co.ug
