Man dies from drinking beer

A FAMILY from Jambezi on Sunday postponed the burial of a man who had died mysteriously after complaining of stomach pains as allegations spread that he was poisoned while drinking beer at a neighbour’s homestead.

Police were called in to investigate after Vincent Kanyani Nyoni, 56, of Tamuka Village 3, died minutes after drinking opaque beer.

Nyoni’s body was ferried to Victoria Falls District Hospital mortuary on Sunday before it was transferred to Bulawayo for postmortem.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Namatirai Mashona said investigations were in progress to ascertain the cause of death.

“I can confirm that we received a report of sudden death and investigations are being conducted,” she said.
Nyoni reportedly left his homestead in the morning for a parents’ meeting at a local school and on his way back, stopped for a beer drink at a neighbours’ homestead.

It is alleged that when he got home around 6PM, Nyoni started complaining of abdominal pains and died on admission to Jambezi Clinic.

“He arrived home from a beer drink and told his wife he was having stomach pains.

They thought it was a minor stomach ache but when she saw that his condition was deteriorating, the wife rushed to call neighbours who ferried him to the clinic in a scotch cart,” said a relative.

Tamuka Village head Mathias Ncube said villagers suspected Nyoni was poisoned.

“The whole village is shocked because he was not sick.

No-one has been linked to it but everyone suspects foul play and would want police to investigate.

For now we will wait for the post mortem for direction,” he said.

Nyoni’s wife Faustina Shoko said she was still in shock to talk about the matter.-Online
