In an address to the permanent secretaries of different ministries, President Mnangagwa hinted that he will be consolidating a number of ministries and will be retrenching employees that have reached retirement age.

Mnangagwa is still to set up his government and has been consulting with the intention of building a leaner and more efficient system. Today he held a consultative meeting with Permanent Secretaries of the current ministries.

I want to assure you that noone will be laid off, except those who have reached retirement age. Those whose Ministerial posts will be abolished will be re-skilled and re-assigned to other areas in the Public Service

In the same meeting Mnangagwa emphasized the need to focus on practical efforts to jump-start the economy. It is however the news of the impending lay off that may cause tremors among the aged workers in government. Most of them have seen their savings decimated by years of economic destruction under the Mugabe rule.
