FORMER finance minister, Samuel Mumbengegwi, once one of President Mugabe’s trusted ministers, has died.

The late Mumbengegwi once served as higher education minister and minister of international trade before he was moved to indigenisation and empowerment portfolio in 2005. In 2007 he took over from Herbert Murerwa as minister of finance.

Great Zimbabwe University vice chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo, told the state media that the former minister died Tuesday morning at Harare’s Avenues Clinic from an unknown ailment. He was adimitted at the clinic’s intensive care unit last month.

The ex-minister was now a lecturer at the Masvingo-based University’s faculty of education.

A report in the state media quoted Zvobgo saying he received the sad news from the late minister’s brother

“We are still waiting for details regarding funeral arrangements from the family,” Professor Zvobgo told the Herald.

The departed minister was a brother to Foreign Affairs Minister, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.

Samuel quit active politics after losing his Chivi North parliamentary seat in 2008, and became a lecturer.
