War veterans leader Christopher Mutsvangwa’s son, Neville, who is alleged to have raped a 43-year-old woman, was set up in a move aimed at politically destroying the outspoken veteran of the liberation struggle amid reports the woman is being handled by members of the G40, a group of young Turks who have coalesced around First Lady Grace Mugabe.

Mutsvangwa is alleged to be backing vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ascendency to the presidency in the cutthroat succession debacle engulfing Zanu PF.

G40, on the other hand has vowed to derail Mnangagwa’s rise.

Mutsvangwa has been vocal and a footsoldier in the succession debate leading to his expulsion from both government and Zanu PF.

Last week Neville was dragged to the courts facing rape allegations which he has since denied. Sources said the woman, identified as Eugenia is being used by G40 whose proponents include Grace, Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere.

On several occasions Mutsvangwa and Kasukuwere have crossed paths in the succession wrangle that is splitting Zanu PF into two.

Police sources said during interrogations last week Eugenia said she was being handled by some people and any move she made was supposed to be in consultation.

“She shocked police when they asked her whether she was telling the truth or not leading to her divulging she has handlers,” the source said.

This, however, became true when after the court case Eugenia was seen celebrating at a local hotel in the company of her handlers. Investigations revealed Eugenia has links with Stanley Kasukuwere and they are always in contact.

Sources also said Eugenia has been in love with Neville who is said to be in possession of evidence that the two knew each other since February this year.

“This will be used in court because the woman insisted she was raped,” said a source close to the developments. “The fact that the two, Eugenia and Stanley, were celebrating last Friday betrayed the whole plot,” sources said.

Neville Mutsvangwa appeared in court on Friday before Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe charged with two counts of rape and aggravated indecent assault. He was remanded to August 28 on $50 bail.
