Prisoner sentenced to 18 more years in jail for sodomising fellow inmate

RUSAPE: A convict currently serving a 12-year jail term for sodomy will have to stay a bit longer behind bars after he was slapped with additional 18 years by local magistrate for sodomising a fellow prisoner.

Panganai Tavengwa, 29, appeared before magistrate Livistone Chaparadza facing charges of aggravated indecent assault and was convicted after a full trial.

Chipadze said Tavengwa has refused to repent and therefore a lengthy jail sentence was appropriate to deter would be offenders.

“Your showed this honorable court that you don’t want to repent so I am left with no choice but to add 18 years on top of the 12 years you are serving for the same offence,” said Chipadza.

According to court papers, Tavengwa who is serving his jail term at Rusape prison, on April 25 and at around 2300 hours, sodomized another inmate who was sleeping next to him.

The court heard that while asleep, the complainant felt a pain in his bottom and woke up.

He discovered that Tavengwa was sodomising him and confronted the assailant who begged him not to report the matter.

The court was further told that the complainant started crying and told prison officers who were on duty about the abuse, leading to the arrest of Tavengwa.

The complainant told the court that he suffered mentally and emotionally from the attack.-NewZimbabwe.com
