Shock as Bindura school teacher receives snake parcel in a meal mealie bag

There was drama at Chipadze Primary School Tuesday afternoon when the teacher-in-charge received a “snake gift” in a meal mealie bag.

Chipadze Primary school is located in Bindura, the capital town of Mashonaland Central Province.

School business came to an abrupt halt, as pupils abandoned lessons and rushed to the grounds to follow the drama. The incident also drew the attention those living nearby.

The teacher-in-charge, only identified as Ms Maphosa, was reportedly attending a staff meeting when the ‘parcel’ was delivered.

Colleagues said she so shocked that she could not leave her chair until the police and officials from Parks and Wildlife Department came to collect the parcel.

When NewZimbabwe.com tried to get a comment, the visibly shaken Maphosa refused to discuss the issue.

According to witnesses, the parcel was delivered by three young men in the afternoon when parents were picking up their Grade Zero and Grade One children.

“The young men came and stood by the gate among other parents as if they wanted to pick up the infants who finish school at 12 pm,” said one eyewitness.

“They gave the sack to one pre-schooler and instructed the young one to deliver the parcel to Ms Maphosa.

“The boys could not carry the heavy parcel and had to be assisted by other two Grade Six boys.

“However, there was violent movement in the sack and the boys dropped it to the ground. This attracted the attention of the whole school, teachers and parents.”

Police officers arrived at the school about an hour later and had difficulty dispersing the curious crowd.

“When the National Park officials arrived at the school grounds they could not open the parcel as they feared the ‘snake’ could end up biting someone as it was becoming violent.

“They also said that they were not going to shoot the snake while it was still in the bag.”

However, when the parcel was later opened at Bindura Police Station around 6 pm it was discovered that the whole thing was an elaborate prank.

The supposed ‘snake’ was, in fact, just two kittens.
