He was recently appointed to the board of the new Development Bank (BRICS Bank) as a non-executive director.

“I’m delighted to be associated in such a meaningful way with Wits, its students and faculty.

“As one of the leading institutions located in the heart of the financial markets in South Africa and on the continent, Wits has an important contribution to make through its academic endeavours in these relevant areas,” said Mboweni.

Best known as the former governor of the Reserve Bank (1999–2009) and the Minister of Labour (1994–1998), Mboweni currently serves as an advisor to Goldman Sachs International.

He is a non-executive chairman of the boards of Nampak Limited, SacOil Holdings Ltd, Accelerate Property Fund and the African Center for Economic Transformation.

He is a non-executive director of Discovery Ltd, and a non-executive director of PPC.

Mboweni is also a member of the advisory board of Total Oil Marketing’s strategic consultative committee for Africa and the Middle East and a member of the ANC’s national executive committee.

He has held several other noteworthy positions in the ANC and the private and public sectors.

“It’s an honour and a privilege for us to welcome Mboweni to Wits University,” says Prof Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand.

“His knowledge, expertise and political and economic savvy will add value to our teaching and research programmes and will be hugely beneficial to our staff, students and members of the Wits community. We look forward to many debates and robust interactions going forward.”

Mboweni holds a BA in Economics and Political Science from the University of Lesotho and an MA in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

He served as Chancellor of the North-West University from 2002 to 2005 and has been awarded several honorary doctorates both locally and abroad.

The appointment, effective August 1, is located in the School of Economic and Business Sciences, in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management at the University of the Witwatersrand.

“Given our current economic circumstances and Africa’s role in the global economy, we require many more intellectuals of the calibre of Mboweni to influence young minds and to develop our future leaders,” concludes Habib.
