VIDEO: Zimbabwean arrested after high-speed chase by UK police

A ZIMBABWEAN national was arrested in dramatic movie style in Manchester, United Kingdom, by the British police and now faces several criminal charges after being spotted driving dangerously at high-speed while under the influence of alcohol, before he tussled with police who had to subsume him with a taser.

Desmond Mombeyarara, aged 34, was arrested shortly before 11pm on Wednesday this week after police spotted a vehicle being driven unsafely at high speed on Chester Road, in Stratford.

The charge sheet says Mombeyarara resisted arrest and police had to subdue him using a taser which was deployed by a Great Manchester Police officer.

Mombeyarara, who resides in Old Trafford, was charged with the following:

  • Two counts of resisting constables in the conduct of their duties,
  • One count of driving at excessive speed,
  • One count of driving without a valid vehicle insurance,
  • One count of being unfit to drive through drink (drunken driving),
  • One count of failing without reasonable excuse to cooperate with a preliminary test,
  • One count of failing to stop when ordered to do so, and
  • One ccount of unnecessary travel.

Mombeyarara was remanded in custody by a Manchester Magistrates Court to Friday, 8th May, for continuation of trial.

Local police spokesperson in Manchester, Mark Kenny, said the case was being treated seriously in view of the fact that the UK is largely under a lockdown meant to starve off the spread of the coronavirus.
