Zimbabwean son, Brian naira, currently competing in the U.S. primetime show the Voice, will Monday night perform during the show’s coveted “live” rounds.
Nhira, born in the United States to Zimbabwean parents, will now require votes for a chance to win the show. He, along with 18 others, will perform weekly and public votes will ultimately decide the winner.
He entered the show and became sought after by judge, producer and artist Pharrell Williams and musician Blake Shelton, but ultimately picking Williams “team Pharrell.”
But it wasn’t long before Nhira found himself nearly eliminated during the battle rounds against teammate Abby Celso, where the two were tasked at singing “Sugar,” a song by Maroon 5, whose lead singer is judge fellow Adam Levine.
“Going into the battle rounds, both of our objective was to make the decision as hard as possible on Pharrell. We wanted to make him agonize over this decision, agonize over who he would have to pick as the winner,” said Nhira.
Ultimately, Nhira was not picked by Williams, who confidently hoped that Nhira would be stolen by one of the other judges.
On the Voice, during the battle rounds, contestants who aren’t chosen by their respective coach can be stolen by another coach and automatically become a member of their team.
“I ended up being the one who lost the battle, but thankfully I was stolen by Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera and I decided to go with Adam Levine.”
Now on “Team Adam,” Nhira entered the “knockout” rounds, where a pair of artists within the same team are selected to sing individual performances in hopes to move on.
Singing Bruno Mar’s Grenade, Nhira was selected over his teammate, Nate Butler.
“I picked Grenade because, first of all I thought that it would be a great knockout song, you know. Knockout is a round where you have about a minute and a half to prove to the coach that you belong to stay on the team.”
Now he moves onto the live performance rounds, though Nhira didn’t reveal his song for the week. He said he was excited to sing the song picked by his coach Levine.
The public can vote for participating contestants using the shows mobile app, the Voice Facebook page, NBC Universal’s web page, and by purchasing any contestant’s ITunes single.
