Zim man accused of rape at UK mental health unit is still on the run

Police are still searching for a 52-year-old man accused of rape and indecent assault at a mental health unit in Devon.

Officers believe Bester Mashayamombe may be in Zimbabwe where he is hiding out with the help of friends and relatives.

Mashayamombe, of Granby Street, Devonport, Plymouth failed to appear at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on October 7, 2015, after being charged by police with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by touching at the Glenbourne Unit, reports plymouthherald

Devon and Cornwall Police are working with the Zimbabwean authorities to trace Mashayamombe but have yet to locate him. A spokesman said: “Bester Mashayamombe from Plymouth was charged with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by touching in September 2015.

“He failed to appear at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on the October 7, 2015, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Devon and Cornwall Police is now working under the belief that Mr Mashayamombe is currently in Zimbabwe. Will be working with other authorities to promote the warrant and arrest, and to ensure his return to the UK.”
