Mugabe Accuses General Chiwenga Of Treason As Tanks Blockade Harare

Zimbabwe most senior military general Constantino Chiwenga has been accused of issuing a  treasonous statement and may face the death penalty following what the ruling party Zanu PF described as military coup.

Chiwenga on Monday afternoon sternly rebuked the Zanu PF  in a rare open criticism of President Robert Mugabe’s ruling party before unleashing army tanks and personnel headed for Harare early Tuesday.

Mugabe ‘s party has now issued a statement saying General Chiwenga’s statement was treasonous, meant to disturb national peace and stability.

Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party said on Tuesday it would never succumb to military pressure and described a statement by the armed forces chief that he would intervene to end a purge within the party as “treasonable conduct”.

In the statement, ZANU-PF said it stood by the “primacy of politics over the gun” and accused armed forces chief Constantino Chiwenga of trying to disturb the peace and stability of the impoverished southern African nation.
